Microsoft officially ends support for Windows 8

Written By Unknown on Wednesday, January 13, 2016 | 11:32 PM

Microsoft has officially ended supporting its Windows 8 operating system, which was launched in October 2016. The operating system represented the first big transition for the world's biggest software maker, which was moving from the desktop-only approach to a more mobile-oriented look.

The end of support for Windows 8 means that Microsoft will not issue any more bug fixes or security patches for the OS. However, existing users can continue to use it.

However, many users are unlikely to be affected by the end of support as Microsoft offered a free upgrade to Windows 8.1 to users of Windows 8. It has since extended the upgrade support to Windows 10 as well.

Those who upgrade to Windows 8.1 will get technical support from Microsoft till January 2023.

Windows 8 was among the most controversial OSes released by Microsoft, as it was a paradigm shift for desktop users in terms of interface and usability. Moreover, the Tiles of the tablet interface did not elicit a positive response from most users.

Along with Windows 8, Microsoft has ended support for Internet Explorer 8, 9 and 10.
